Bunaken Artisan Village

Objective: Develop a Successful Artisan Village Program to Create New Eco-Friendly Livelihood and Income Generation Opportunities for the Local Community to Promote Cultural Heritage.

Centrally located between the three main villages on Bunaken Island, the Bunaken Artisan Village’s 1.3 hectare site will serve as a crossroads for tourists to share authentic, hands-on, experiences with local artisans from the marine park. It will feature artisan workshops, cooking classes, exhibitions, cultural exchanges, and other educational events as a venue to raise awareness regarding sustainable livelihoods issue.

Responding to BNMP’s need for livelihood diversification and enhancement, the Bunaken Artisan Village will produce immediate and long-term opportunities for local residents to supplement their current income through the sale of ethically and locally produced arts and crafts, and demonstrations of skills. It will also provide an interactive, cultural experience for tourists while promoting the preservation of the marine park’s heritage and charm.

Revenue from workshops and handicrafts available for purchase will be divided on a 90:10 basis, where 90% of gross sales will go directly to the artisan whose goods are purchased and 10% will go towards a Future Programs Disbursement Fund for the local community to support future initiatives such as this. RACI:Indonesia is working to ensure that these new alternative livelihoods opportunities are made available to outer island residents in a way that meets their convenience.

The Artisan Village is opening summer 2010, so please come and see us during your next trip to Bunaken and take part in our daily workshops highlighting local arts and crafts and traditional Indonesian cooking. For more information please contact us.
